In order to bring this project into fruition, I need to have the right amount of funds to ensure that I can get to Morocco and shoot this documentary. There is of course the essential aspects such as transfers, translator, food etc... which I've been researching into and proportioning sections of my budget. Luckily one of the more expensive areas of any film's budget has been covered as I'm able to make use of my University's Media Loan Shop. However, I have detailed what the costs may have been to rent the equipment using Rate cards as well as the breakdown of the current budget for the documentary. In terms of crew, I only have one person coming with me as technical support. I am paying for this trip and opportunity for him; he will receive credit in the final piece for his help.
Budget (£800) Equipment Hire (Day Rate):
2 x Canon Mark 2 DSLR Camera = (£75 x 2) £150
2 x Video Tripods = (£15 x 2) £30
2 x Sennheiser Clip Mics = (£15 x 2) £30
1 x Zoom H5 = £24
3 x LED Box Lights = (£18 x 3) £54
2 x Shure DSLR Mic (£19 x 2) £38
2 x Headphones (£5 x 2) £10
The total day rate if I was to hire the equipment would be £336 and for the total time required it would be a final cost of £4368 for 13 days. Thankfully I have the Media Loan Shop that has this equipment. I will be insuring all of it however.
Return Flights via London Stansted to Fez = £267.96
Return Transfers from Fez Airport to Sefrou = £50
Translator/Facilitator Max use 4 days = £160
Food = £100
This is the main logistical costs. I have organised free transfers from Coventry to London Stansted and have secured free accommodation as we will be doing some extra filming for our hosts. Total cost here is £607.96. I have £192.04 remaining that will be used for insuring the equipment as well as for emergencies whilst over there.
I have raised the total £800 myself through the work I do and some sponsors that are interested in the project. These will be revealed at a later time. I am excited to get filming underway, I feel that I have been fortunate in my planning and ensured we have a good setup and that we'll be fairly grounded once arriving in Sefrou. Focusing on the schedule of filming, we will be flying out to Morocco on the 19th February. Orientation will follow the next day and the main interview will take place on the Tuesday. We have the week to work comfortably with Mustapha and ensure he is happy. I want to capture as much of Sefrou and of Mustapha's work as possible so we'll be busy throughout the week. Going into March I will move into post-production and starting a rough cut. I would like it to be finished by the end of April. I can then spend more time on distribution and ensuring all of the best material is together ready to send out to festivals.
I have completed a Risk Assessment form highlighting some of the possible risks and threats out in Sefrou and measures I'll put in place to reduce said risks. I also have an Ethical checklist that shows this project will not bring any negative attention to Mustapha or Coventry University. I will be completing a consent form when I meet with Mustapha and before we actually begin interviewing him. The forms can be accessed below:
I have spent the last two and a half years working on a number of projects both in and outside of University. I have helped shoot and edit a number of short films. I have helped shoot a few documentaries and had real success with one in particular last year that got nominated for a Royal Television Society award. This time round I'd like to take what I've learned and put it to practise in a foreign environment. Creating something unique, showing people a hidden world away from the norm. I have been to Sefrou before, I know a lot of the local people here. I am staying with Culture Vultures, an organisation who work closely with the artisanal community. This project will be beneficial for the Moroccan people as I want to bring recognition to their traditional crafts, to the life of Mustapha Elghorami who has dedicated so much to what he believes in. I want to capture this as best I can. I'm excited to jet out to Sefrou soon and begin filming what will surely be a beautiful piece.
